Shaking off my Friday Night Funk

This was the message which set off alarm bells and caused some to ask “what’s wrong?”

What led me to feel this way and resulted in me turning into the KFC drive-thru?

Work. More specifically, continuously feeling like I am hitting my head against a brick wall for initiatives which will make the employees better.

So I left work Friday pissed, so pissed that the only thing I felt could help me blow off steam was junk. (I paid dearly next day for having eaten the crappy food.). And I felt like I wanted to detach from the world.

After a few messages and calls Friday and Saturday, I did the self talk, dusted myself off and decided not to wallow. The other thing which shifted my perspective was overhearing a conversation between two ladies on Saturday night.

“[Name of man friend] is always drunk. Drunk every day. He is verbally abusive to me.” 😔

Well, life is not so bad for me then.

I made an effort to get out and about this weekend. And no. I didn’t go to the beach. It would have made my mind still and inevitably lead me back to thinking about the incident which led to my Friday Night Funk. I needed to keep busy. So here’s what I did…

  • Marked mid term assignments. Only 15.
  • Went to the office on Saturday for about 5 hours from circa 4 p.m. It’s so peaceful and quiet. Got a lot done.
  • Went to the Supermarket after work.
  • Sunday, went up in the back garden. Happily there were some open low lying ackees which the stick could reach.

  • Put clothes to wash then headed to the gym. But while on the way, decided I wanted a pedicure. The time available meant I could only do 15 minutes exercise. I cycled for 3 minutes, then foam rolled and stretched. Some thing is better than nothing, init?
  • Got a good pedicure and a leg massage as a bonus.

Green Tea with Lemongrass. Soothing.

    • I couldn’t go back home just yet. Had to let the polish dry. So, in my track suit pants and slippers, I went to the cricket ground. Windward Islands Volcanoes was playing T&T Red Force. Imagine I didn’t know cricket was playing here. That is to tell you how snowed under I have been. A fella made a century soon after I got there.

    Cricket, lovely cricket

Had to find food. What? No macaronie pie? I asked the lady if she didn’t know that Sundays mean pie!! She had soup though. What? No dumplings!!! Are you kidding me???😕

    Cow heel soup

    • Sat and ate it in the stands while fending off an old man who kept asking me for my number. Playful banter. His friends told him to stop harrassing me. But being at a cricket match stirs up these warm and fuzzy feelings in me so I wasn’t bothered.
    • Home time, but not before stopping on the road side for a coconut. Grenadians call it ‘waternut’

    Coconut jelly

    • Back home, time to clean, cook, eat and read.

    Ackee, salmon, bammy and plantain

Prepared my lunch pan for Monday, feeling quite satisfied with how the weekend had been spent. Saw this horoscope for Libra in the papers. It seemed appropriate.

Feeling grateful for all the love and concern shown. Thanks! 🖒🖒🤗🤗

Can’t recall how I came across this eating concept. Perhaps it was the “The 8 hour diet” by David Zinczenko, or maybe while surfing.

The first time I tried it a few years ago, I had a headache for the first day. I was a “eat breakfast within 30 minutes of waking” kinda person, from ever since. Back then, I had to have coffee at least, and not black, in order to last out the fasting period after waking. Nowadays, I just have warm water and some green tea without sugar, and I am good until it is time to eat. It is a quick way to get a flat (ish) stomach.

Here is an infographic detailing the benefits and also the schedule one might follow. Give it a try. Intermittent Fasting has been in the news lately. It’s called IF for short.

Gym stories 19/03: In the home stretch

I’d jumped on the scale at physio on Friday so knew that I’d lost some more. Would it be enough? Will I meet my target for the 40 days? These two final days had to count.

Not sure I was up for the hard workout today.

Gym episode 13/03: I want to make magic

The heat was being turned up. We were coming into the final stretch of the 40 day weight loss challenge. One week from today, to be exact. Normally my Sunday workouts consist of calming yoga and tai chi. But when the Trainer is available for a rare Sunday session, you ditch those, but in favour of what? Continue reading

    My 4 day lay off

I looked on with envy last Friday as Bambi took my colleagues through a Zumba class. :|😭😭 But it served me right…..don’t?

On Saturday, I enjoyed being able to sleep in a little bit later, since I didn’t have to rush to the 9 a.m. Pilates class. When I finally got out of the house, I headed straight to a fundraising fair which was featuring food from various countries……with an empty stomach. Why? Continue reading

    Gym episode 03/03: Grounded!

Isn’t that what happens when you misbehave? You’re grounded? Pleasure activities are taken away from you? Here’s the story of Thursday and how it turned out.

Yet another late night Wednesday, this time because I had work deadlines to meet. In this job, the concept of ‘homework’ is real. So I went to bed upset….and got up in the same mood. In my mind, I steupsed all the way on the drive to the gym. But sometimes along the way, positive thoughts crept in. ‘Miss Foot, what you complaining for? You have a job. You can get around with ease. You have a great Trainer. You know how many people got up this morning, wondering how they’re going to make it?” Ok mind. Be quiet!

Aye. Arrived late, so did 5 mins warm up. Upper body work today with some new exercises. Yay! I like that Damion mixes things up. Mi get bored very easily. 😐

In between the weights, he took me into the exercise room. The task? Run up and down the length of the room 5 times while he timed me. The first time was 45 seconds. The second was 43. After both times I was out of breath! Happily too. Heart working. Fat loss happening. And most importantly, I did not crash into the mirrors!

Completed the weight training then quite unusually, we had a long chat. His discipline is incredibly inspiring. Between now and his first show next month, I will be able to witness first hand, how he trains and how he eats. We spent a lot of time talking about the latter. I was again urged to read labels and had to send this to him for vetting. It passed the test.

Thursday afternoon is where things took a turn for the worse. Continue reading

Gym Episode 22/02: “Every rep counts”

I went through Monday’s lunchtime gym session with Damion Daniel thinking “be careful what you wish for Ms Yamfoot” :?. I’d told him on the weekend that I wanted to do more exercises for the butt. That meant squats and lunges were included.

My knees are getting accustomed to these exercises and I’ve actually not been bothered by them so much, since stepping up my quantity of exercise.

I had to abandon the 10lb dumbells the Trainer had given me to use while doing the lunges. A few times too, I was about to topple over. Ever watchful, he was there to ensure that didn’t happen. Mek mi tell yuh……my thighs certainly felt the burn!

The key to maximizing that move is to keep upright and also get your knee touching the floor when you go down, and drive up using your glutes. I’d watched him last week executing those in perfect form so I knew what it looked like. Heart was willing but thighs and butt were weak. I kept reminding him that I had to go back to work, when I tried to pause during a set. “Every rep counts,” he said, followed by some encouragement.

To finish up, did 10 minutes of the elliptical. It gets easier each day.
