Left of centre, centre, right of centre..

Apart from admiring Professor Trevor Munroe's butt in his jeans while he taught me Introduction to Politics at UWI Mona, I know zilch about politics. But I am following this American Democratic vote very carefully and will watch all the tv I can to see this Obama dude and Miss Hilary fight it out.

In the meantime, can someone in the know explain to me about being left of centre, centre and right of centre? That I have never been able to get.

Hi Mich,
Living here in the US, it is hard to keep up with the politics, but I'm following this one with some interest particularly since a woman and a black man with some potential are running. Regarding the left, middle and right views, my understanding is that left means that you are liberal in your views, i.e. believe in woman right to choose and tolerate homosexuality, on the other extreme you have right which is very conservative highly religious and believe in tight immigration policies, now middle is a mixture of these views your belief in some left and right principles, if you believe in more left than right then you are middle left, conversely if you believe more right than left, then you are right middle. So you may hear commentators saying this candidate is leaning left or leaning right depending on their views. I hope you understand a bit more about these views, if not I would have failed in my calling as a professor.

I thought left meant leaning to socialist (communist) views. Or is this out since the cold war is over?
