You may have read that two priests who were not Jamaican, were shot dead in downtown Kingston, from one single bullet. The theory is that it was a stray bullet. These priests are part of a group called Missionaries of the Poor who do great work for poor Jamaicans as well as people with HIV/AIDS. So who would want to kill them, right?
Well the bullet went through the head of one, into the other. Father Richard HoLung, who, apart from being a priest is also a producer of a musical event called Father HoLung & Friends, has written an article in today's Gleaner talking about the killings and that they forgive the gunman/men.
I guess that's what it means to be a priest. Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they do. I wonder how the shooter feels when he hears all of the news surrounding the killing? Probably nothing. He is probably numb with anger, rage and fury, all directed at life and those who participate in it.
Claude from the Blogland went to visit the compound. Here is his story
Posted by yamfoot at October 30, 2005 11:03 PMI read the article too, and Jah know I am shocked and angered....I suppose Father HoLung and his crew has no other way to cope than to forgive, after all, isn't that what Jesus would have done?
Posted by: AngryDog at October 31, 2005 11:00 AMFr. Ho Lung taught MB, Scratchie and myself in high school....we (moost of us in schol) never did see eye to eye with him at all....we thought his ideas a bit wayward....
Much as my faith in the Lord is strong....whether the bullet was indeed 'stray' or intended for someone else....the gun is in the hand of some wrongdoer....I hope that eventually the security forces will eventually bring the criminal to justice...
At least we are another 'one less' now that Bulbie, previous leader of the Clansman gang is no longer around to shine. Only problem is some scorpion or roach out deh dat going succeed him.
Oh Jamaica.......my heart aches for my country!
Posted by: Dr. D. at October 31, 2005 03:10 PMIf it was an accident then it is. Its a "Long Suffering" Thing thats why its easy to forgive and move on. they don't really believe in the whole bagage/hate thing.
Posted by: owen at October 31, 2005 06:55 PMStray or no stray, there are too many guns in the hands of cold blooded, criminals. The crime situation in the island is horrible and it has to stop if Jamaica is to survive.
Posted by: stunner at October 31, 2005 08:43 PMYes, Fr. Ho Lung and the BOTP seem to have forgiven the gunmen. I admire them. Hats off, Father. My views have mellowed somewhat since St. Gc. and you know what? You and your band of brothers rock!
Posted by: Mad Bull at October 31, 2005 10:44 PMMany of us alredy read the story of Missionaries of the poor and the two brothers. I was really shocked and more over marvell at the brothers for their courage and dedication in working with the poor purtivularly in the violant struck down town kingston. God Bless them and all those who involve in the ministry. I used to be one of the brothers of the poor for 6 years and i know the dedication and the courage of the missionaries of the poor.I hope that let this insident may not just stay as a 'story' but let it bring awareness and a helping hand to the missionaries of the poor. Let the life of the two missionaries be an inspiration for the missionaries. "when you have done un to them you have done un to Me"
