My 9 year old niece has a project to do, which involves finding a picture of the current West Indies team and pasting it in her scrap book. How lovely it was therefore to see one in today's Gleaner advertising the start of the Digicel Home series.
She looked at the fellas in the picture then said "Where's Brian Lara?". I said that he was not in the team. Then she went on to ask for both Chris Gayle (who she has met) and Sarwan. Same response from me.
Her response?
"Then that can't be a West Indies team then!"
Even at 9 years old, they know.

Posted by: Miles Turton at March 31, 2005 11:05 AMtell she lara , sarwan and gayle gone but the team remains
I agree with Jdid... It is the West Indies! Watch, we going to get similar results to what would have occurred if Lara, and his bredrins were on the team... though maybe Gayle and Sarwan won't be out in the cold too long. I heard on Vibe FM this AM that they are both voicing out about trying to get out of their contracts with C&W. Hmph! Wha mek? Them never realise seh the train coulda lef' them?
I knew that all bias - minded, so-called WI cricket fan would be surprised that witout Gayle, Lara and Sarwan the proteas would get their surprises. Captain Smith sunk the tide tanic and captain Smith big mouth would be shut. Just tell those who wants to see the WI team fall that Im pretty sorry for them.Thank you.

Posted by: james at March 31, 2005 07:45 PMWhile I agree that as West Indians we should support the WI team I would like anyone to convince me of Digicel's right to select the WI team, because that is exactly what they are doing by rejecting Lara, Gayle,Sarwan etc because of purely commercial purposes.
The WI team belongs to all of us and therefore we should send a strong message to the WICB that we are very dissatisfied with their handling of the present impasse and insist that they select the " best team" despite the pressure being applied by Digicel, because WI cricket is bigger than 20 million dollars. What better way to send that message than by boycotting the games?
Indeed, we have Caribbean people who are now prepared to sponsor WI cricket so let us put an end to foreigners controlling our destiny and WI cricket.
Next we must turn our attention to WICB and their mismanagement of WI cricket over the years. Time for a change!!
Posted by: Bobby Benjamin at March 31, 2005 11:02 PMWith or without them it is still West Indies team. Can they do much worse..I think not.We not even a winning team with them anyway.
Posted by: kami at April 1, 2005 05:27 PMExactly, Kami... though I love the way the man dem start the match. The next point that I would make is that it can't really be every man for himself. Running cricket costs money, and 20 million is big dollars. The players need to work with the programme, because with or without them, the m,atch a go play. As Bobby said above, W. I. Cricket belongs to all of us... I would disagree with the rest though by saing it doh belong to any individual player of group of players.
Posted by: Mad Bull at April 1, 2005 08:16 PMHey Bobby wake up and smell the coffee, if dicel select this team, just take a moment and read the scoreboard on the match playing at bourda right now, and beleive it or not, our team declare from the proteas. Sorry your team is not playing and you can have my sympathy, also youre a loser while the WI team is progressing.
